In partnership with Etsy. Each piece here was selected by me, and all opinions are my own
Designing the front door for autumn does not have to choose between scary and beautiful. Every October, my door behaves in magical chic: a wreath of dark plums framing the opening, a black cat sitting in the bottom pane, a cobweb tucked in the top corner, a flight of bats and three skeletons dancing on the carpet. On November 1st, the Halloween pieces come off and the raised facing door falls right through Thanksgiving, no need for a second shopping spree. Fall is not one holiday, so your door doesn’t have to start over for everyone. Everything making the transition came from Etsy.
How to decorate your front door for fall
A front door is a frame, not a shelf. The doors that make people slow down on the sidewalk are built in three layers, and each one does a different job.
the framework. Something that outlines the opening. A wreath above the header and down one side is read as directed from the street, in a way that a single wreath rarely does, especially on double doors or doors with glass, where a wreath is not good for hanging.
the glass. If your door has windows, use them. Window stickers make the glass part of the design, and are the easiest layer to change during the holiday.
the land Pumpkins, planters and the mat. This is where the ladder lives. Cluster in mixed sizes, keep the palette to three or four colors, and give yourself one tall element so the bottom of the door can meet the height of the wreath.
What makes it chic instead of a costume is the color. Keep it bright orange with an accent. Dark plum foliage, black silhouettes, and fairy tale pumpkins in dark tan with little white-ghost minis call moody and grown-up in October, and that palette is just what allows the door to slide into Thanksgiving without looking like Halloween leftovers.
The Etsy Find Behind My Witchy Chic Front Door
Every item here came from an independent Etsy shop, and all the window decals came from one: a Salt Lake City shop that’s been cutting vinyl since 2002.
1. The dark plum bouquet

this A bouquet of dark plums She is the reason the door reads chic instead of cute. It’s Faux cimicifuga, the jagged, jagged plant gardeners call black cohosh, in a dark plum that ranges from burgundy to almost black depending on the light. Most fall wreaths are orange maple. It looks like it’s been cut from a shield that’s a little bit magical and a little bit haunted, which is exactly the line that a chic witch door walks. Each strand runs 5.5 feet, and two were enough for my double doors: one across the top of the frame, one trailing on the side. Our porch is covered, which is important here, since the listing doesn’t call it exterior grade; keep it from direct rain. And since it’s foliage, not a costume, it’s the piece that stays until Thanksgiving (and will be back next year!).
5.5ft Artificial Fall Seeds with Cimicifuga Seeds in Dark Plum $25 per bouquet, with packs of up to six for a larger opening. Shop the Dark Plum Wreath from LushDesignsShopCo on Etsy
2. The dancing skeleton doormat

Three skeletons dance in the middle of a natural rooster, two of them swinging jack-o-lantern buckets like they’re on their way to your door for candy, with bats and some orange leaves swirling around them. It’s the one piece on the door that’s actually funny, and that’s its whole job: it keeps the witches from getting serious, and it’s the thing that guests are laughing at before you even open the door. The bats on the mat correspond to the bats on the glass above it, so the door feels designed from top to bottom. Summer runs WorldGiftApparel out of Texas, where her store has racked up more than 5,600 sales. The mat has a black rubber backing that prevents it from slipping, and is happiest on a covered porch, as Koir doesn’t like sitting in the rain. I laid it on my plaid doormat, which I keep outside year round.

On November 1st, replace the carpet with this one Thankful doormat.
3. The spider web, the black cat and the bat stickers

All three stickers arrived MyWordSwagAngie’s store in Salt Lake City. She’s been cutting vinyl since 2002, been on Etsy since 2008, and makes everything in the USA. Each design comes pre-spaced under transfer tape, so even the spider web, with all its fine lines, goes up in one piece.
Cobwebs shatter from the top corner of one pane as a single spider falls on its web; You can order it to the left, right or both corners. The bats fly over the top of the glass in the right door. They come in sets of mixed sizes, so they look like they’re actually flying instead of in a row.
And then there’s the cat. She sits in silhouette in the bottom panel, tail curled around her feet, and Angie lets you choose which way that tail curls. put it low On the bottom panel, it’s right at eye level for the tiniest tricks, making it the first thing they spot when walking upstairs, long before anyone reaches the doorbell.

Pumpkins and flowers: shop local and go for legends

The pumpkins and mums came from our local nursery, and that’s where I would send you too. Nurseries and farm stands carry the heirloom varieties that grocery store trash never will, and those varieties are the trick. Skip the round orange carving pumpkin and look for fairy tale pumpkins instead. Mine are a mix of full size fairies, mini fairies and mini white pumpkins. The legend (its French name is Musquée de Provence) is deeply ribbed and flat, starting dark green and curing to a warm tan, like it rolled out of a storybook. The white minis tucked in the front are what make the whole thing glow at dusk.
If your nursery has them, you should ask for a few more:
- Geradale: Blue-gray slate, which makes the balcony look expensive.
- Long Island Cheese: Pale and squat, like a wheel of cheese.
- Cinderella (Rouge Vif d’Attemps): Flat storybook shape, deep red-orange color. Use one as an accent, not as a base.
- Anything wart: A spiky one or two add texture, and enchantment, to any cluster.
That’s what makes them so clever in this door: in October, these deep ribs and ghostly white minis called witches. On November 1st, without moving anyone, those pumpkins called harvest.
Build each cluster in three sizes: one large anchor, several medium-sized pumpkins, and several minis tucked in front. Odd numbers always look more natural. Scatter loose leaves around the bases so the clusters look like they’ve settled there themselves.
Mothers do the flower work: a gold and magenta woven pot on the balcony floor, a gold plant stand holding burgundy and orange mothers next to the glass, and a white vase on the other side of the mat. The class is there for height. This brings the color up toward the wreath, so your eye goes through the entire opening instead of stopping at the pumpkins.

How to take your door from a sorcerer’s tangent to an elevated drop
The best part of building a door this way is that you will decorate once. On November 1st, peel away the cobwebs, the cat and the bats. Roll up the skeleton mat and store it in a dry place until next October, then lay down a regular heat mat or a simple surface Harvest or autumn doormat. The plum wreath, fairy tale pumpkins and mums all remain. If you want it to lean a little more towards Thanksgiving, tuck in a few stalks of wheat or gold with the mums. The whole switch takes about 10 minutes, and the door goes from witcher to raised without a single new pumpkin.
The inside of the door can also join. The block print fabric pumpkin from my handmade fall home decor finds handles at the entrance on its other side, and once the door is lined up, all that’s left is deciding what to wear for Thanksgiving.
Frequently asked questions about the design of the front door for autumn
Right after Labor Day is the classic start, and wreaths and pumpkins can stay up until Thanksgiving. If your door has Halloween pieces like window stickers or a skeleton mat, add them in early October and take them down on November 1st so the rest of the door will carry over to the next holiday.
Fairy tale pumpkins are heirloom varieties with flattened, deeply ribbed shapes and dull colors, the kind that look like they rolled out of a storybook. Look for blue-gray Geradale, yellowish Long Island cheese, and Musquee de Provence, which ripens from dark green to tan. Nurseries and farm stands carry the best selection.
Adhesive vinyl decals usually peel off the glass cleanly. Apply them out of direct hot sun, peel slowly at a low angle, and a little glass cleaner or alcohol to pick up any residue. Most vinyl decals are removable but not reusable, so plan a new set each October.
Both work, and mixing is the smartest move. Real uncarved pumpkins last for weeks in cool weather but soften quickly in heat and full sun. Artificial pumpkins make sense for large anchor pieces that you’ll use every year; Heirloom varieties are where true pumpkins earn their place.
Choose fewer layers and do them well. On a narrow threshold, a wreath over the door and one pumpkin cluster on the side gives you the frame and the soil without blocking the path. Skip the pot. If your door has glass, decals add the most personality while taking up zero floor space.
