TL;DR: Zcash’s NU7 update was activated at key block 3,543,405, reducing block spacing from 75 to 25 seconds. It will also change how payments play a role in network security in the future. Faster target blocks don’t pay all the costs, and node operators need compatible computers.
Zcash has crossed a major milestone. The NU7 network upgrade was activated in early November at a block height of 3,543,405, with faster target block space and changes to the economics of future block rewards. The Zcash Foundation’s Zebra 7 release notes identify the height of the active core network and describe the required permissive changes for nodes to follow the chain.
The upgrade is not just a software patch. It changes the way Zcash builds blocks and handles certain transaction fees, while maintaining a broader monetization framework.
Why move from 75 to 25 seconds will change
Zcash’s new target is a block every 25 seconds, down from 75 seconds before the update. In theory, this means that users and services that are waiting for a lot of confirmations can be received as soon as possible. But the target space is a statistical expectation, not a service-level variable: when actual blocks arrive, exchanges or payment processors choose their own confirmation policies.
In order to prevent a third of the number of blocks from the third machine generating new coins, the upgrade will set the fixed price for each block and fix the balance of the supply and half the time. The idea is to issue more blocks while the rate of issuance remains at the previous schedule.
Node-software detail and head speed are important. Zebra’s release notes that administrators must upgrade to an NU7-compatible client in order to stay on the permission chain after the activation point. The user may experience problems if the account or service relies on an old laptop even if the network is working normally.
It is a method of future security deposit
NU7 also introduces a Network Savings Structure that directs a portion of transaction fees into a public reserve for redistribution to miners. 60% of the payments are on the accounts of the update, the remaining 40% are available to the miners during the collection. The stated design goal is to explain the decrease in security costs financed by the fund as the network matures.
That’s a policy choice in public cryptocurrency, not free income. Funds reserved for future payments are not available in the form of payments immediately paid to today’s miners. Evaluating the method involves examining incentives over time, its interaction with market demand and meeting security interests.
The change also removes support for the old four-way transaction, which is based on Zcash’s native Sprout pool. It’s a reminder that long-delayed blockchains can deliver technological gains that will become increasingly difficult to maintain, especially as privacy and token systems evolve.
Faster confirmations still require a practical reality check
Zcash offers privacy-preserving transactions, so network improvements to wallet compatibility, scanning functionality and access to secure payments must also be assessed. The upgrade can improve the underlying capacity without guaranteeing that every transaction, mobile wallet or merchant will adopt the same features.
NewsBTC previously explored the network’s Zebra sync functionality prior to NU7, as the focus was on nodes following the chain. Activation does not remove those administrative responsibilities.
For users and administrators, the next checks are node versions, checked block times, confirmation requirements and whether some wallets have published any NU7 support announcements. The major milestone has been the adoption of a major legislative change; Its daily value is determined by the reliability and use of special prices.
